A Court of Frost and Starlight / ACOTAR #4

ACOFAS

My Review

Oh, where to start with ACOFAS? I have to say, this book was the weakest for me in the ACOTAR universe. While I still enjoyed most of it, some parts were just too... MEH. I absolutely loved the snowball fight, the Solstice decorating, and picking on Amren, but I could have done without Feyre's paintings, gossiping and shopping with Mor or all together Mor's POV (I’m still convinced she’ll go dark or do something dodgy in the future). Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed almost every second of this, and it was really nice to spend some time with all those characters again. BUT (yes, it’s a big but) there were a lot of things that didn’t sit well with me.

Let’s start with the MC’s. I love Feyre and Rhys, I really do, but I think from ACOWAR onward, their character development kind of went sideways. Feyre’s and Rhys’s holier-than-thou attitude is beginning to get on my nerves. Don't get me wrong, I still think Rhys is a demigod and love his sass and cheeky side, but this book kinda hurt his reputation in my eyes, alongside with Feyre’s. Good example of this is Feyre’s treatment of Lucien. If she’d be honest with herself, she’d realise that Lucien isn’t happy at her court and that he has his reasons to stay away from them. Lucien lost so much over the centuries, and now he even lost Tam and his second home. It’s not Feyre’s call to decide what’s best for him. Especially because she’s actually the reason why Lucien isn’t welcome at Tam’s place anymore. I’m just glad that Lucien became friends with Vassa and Jurian because he obviously isn’t welcome at the Night Court. Rhys still doesn’t like him, and Lucien deserves more than to be just tolerated. Also a bonus point for him because he dared to call Feyre and Rhys out on their bullsh*t and didn’t back down! Rhys shouldn’t have done what he did, and the way he treated Tam cost him a lot of my sympathy. Yes, Tamlin made mistakes and hurt Feyre, but that doesn’t mean they have to still hurt him… Rhys should have known better and shouldn’t have kicked Tam when he was already on the ground. Everyone can see that Tamlin is hurting, and to treat him like that? To say what Rhys said to him? It was cruel, mean, and uncalled-for. I feel really sorry for Tam, and Rhys only ‘helped’ him because he might need him in the future, not because he actually cared. Where is your compassion for Tam, Rhys? Where is the Rhys of ACOMAF I fell in love with? I can barely see him anymore. This book hurt his reputation, and I really don't like it.

So, if you haven’t pulled the pitchforks on me because of Rhys and Feyre, I give you some more ammo. I actually don’t care about Elain. Like, AT ALL! Everyone thinks Nesta is a w(b)itch? Oh well, guess what, Elain is even worse because she hides it behind her innocent appearance. I’m tired of everyone defending this woman just because she is so sweet! What did Elain do when Feyre went out hunting for them? She did as much as Nesta to help the family when they were starving, yet everyone attacks only Nesta. Nesta might be a w(b)itch, but at least she went looking for Feyre. What did Elain do besides being pretty in their new fancy house? Everyone loves precious and dear Elain.. Just.. Why? Did Elain ever do anything except look lovely and tend the gardens? Lucien deserves SO MUCH better than her! He didn't choose to be her mate either…! It’s not his fault that they are mates, and people still  judge him for trying to get to know her, to deal with a card he was dealt. She didn’t even try, just straight up cruel to him. And people want the to end up anyway? Or better yet, with Azriel? Hell no…. They both deserve better. Tamlin, on the other hand, would be absolutely perfect for her. Tam would get his Spring bride who loves gardening and flowers, and Elain would get her High Lord and all-time spring with a protective male who'll spoil her rotten. Oh boy, did I get off track. Sorry. Back to the book.

Let's end on a good note after this rant. And if I look for positive things, I always start with my precious Lord of Bloodshed. Buying clothes for his people anonymously? He is a cinnamon roll and could do no wrong. I know he will wear Nesta down as well. They connected right from their first meeting when she was just an annoying human, and I just know he is what Nesta needs. Right now she is a cruel b!tch, but she is struggling with her PTSD and, let’s be honest, not dealing with it well. Still not an excuse to lash out on everyone, but I give her some slack; I have hope for her redemption even if it's hard to see from here. As for the others, I still adore Amren and love that she barely changed after what happened in ACOWAR. Well, she changed in some ways, which was one of the most hilarious parts of this book. And as for Mor? I couldn't really care for her. She is too bland, and she didn't grow on me in four books. I still hope she’ll turn dark to give her some spice. And as usual,Az is still in the shadows, but he is intriguing, and I'm curious where his story is heading (gods, just hope it's NOT leading into Elain's arms).

As a conclusion, this was a nice addition to the first trilogy and a good prequel into the next one. If I close my eyes to the Feysand changes and Feyre's boring endeavours, and pretend it never happened, I’d say it was pretty good read with all the fun of the Snowball Fight and the antics of the Bat-Boys. I can never have enough of them together.
