Once Upon A Broken Heart / OUABH #1
My Review
After devouring the Caraval series, I was incredibly curious about "Once Upon a Broken Heart." As a big fan of Jacks, I couldn't be happier that he is one of the main characters (though the lack of a POV from his side is a bit disappointing). Nonetheless, this book turned out to be the twisted fairytale I didn't know I needed in my life. Whether it was something addictive sprinkled between the pages or just the allure of the story itself, I got completely HOOKED!
Jacks is his usual handsome, evil self, while Evangeline is so pure, naive, and innocent that it's almost frightening at times. The story follows our sweet Evangeline, who has always believed in fairytales and happy endings, thanks to her mother's stories. This belief is shattered when she learns that the love of her life is about to marry another woman—her stepsister, no less. Desperate to stop the wedding and mend her broken heart, Evangeline strikes a deal with the charismatic yet wicked Prince of Hearts. Little did she know just how dangerous a deal with a Fate could be. Jacks stops the wedding, but at what price?
Evangeline's journey transitions from a world filled with magic books and fairytales to one fraught with danger and uncertainty. Despite this, she continues to believe in happily-ever-afters. When she is sent to The Magnificent North as an ambassador, her life changes once again. Fate catches up with her as she encounters Jacks, who is ready to collect on their deal. She owes him three kisses with individuals of his choosing, and it's time to pay up. But with Jacks, it's never just a simple kiss. He has his own agenda, and Evangeline becomes his pawn.
The world-building in this book is exceptional, blending magical and darker elements so skillfully that I became addicted to the story. Jacks is a manipulative, toxic, cocky, and cunning little bastard—traits that have only intensified since Caraval—yet he remains the center of my attention. Evangeline, on the other hand, has a heart of gold and is far too trusting, which is both endearing and frustrating. Their dynamic is electric, and their clashes are magical, much like their entire realm.
The ending left me on edge and, quite frankly, a bit pissed off. I know Evangeline is a trusting person who doesn't always think things through, but come on... really?
Overall, "Once Upon a Broken Heart" is a captivating, twisted fairytale that kept me enthralled from start to finish. The magical yet dark world, combined with the complex characters of Jacks and Evangeline, creates a story that's impossible to put down. If you loved Caraval, you need to dive into this enchanting and treacherous tale.
Time to jump into the next book—I need more of this spellbinding story!
