The Ballad of Never After / OUABH #2
My Review
From the moment Jacks betrays Evangeline, she found herself questioning if she could ever trust him again. This sense of betrayal lingers as Evangeline discovers her own magic, hoping to reclaim the happily ever after that Jacks snatched away. But just as things seem to be looking up, a new, terrifying curse emerges, and Evangeline is forced into an uneasy partnership with the Prince of Hearts once more. This time, the stakes are higher, the rules have changed, and Jacks might be the only ally she has in a world full of new threats.
The narrative is gripping from the get-go, with a murderous spell replacing the usual love spells, thrusting Evangeline and Jacks into a world of peril where old friends become foes and magic manipulates minds and hearts. Evangeline, who once trusted her heart above all else, now faces uncertainty at every turn.
I'll be honest: at the start, I was worried. I feared the series was losing its magic, falling into the dreaded trap of lost potential. For a while, my fears seemed justified, and I almost gave in to the temptation of skim-reading to the end. But then, something magical happened. A moment so pivotal and compelling that it pulled me back into the story with the force of a freight train. Suddenly, I was completely obsessed again, unable to put the book down.
That climactic moment towards the end not only rekindled my interest but also reignited my love for Jacks. The intensity of ‘that’ scene was palpable, making my heart race and my stress levels soar as I devoured the remaining pages. Even now, my heart still throbs with the aftershocks of the story's brilliance.
I made a smart move by waiting until the third book was out before diving into this one. If I had faced that cliffhanger without immediate closure, a riot might have been inevitable! The ending was magnificent, revealing Jacks' secrets in a flood of fantastic twists and turns. It was everything I hoped for and more.
However, my rating for *The Ballad of Never After* loses a star due to the slow start. The initial chapters almost led me to abandon the book, but the magical turnaround saved it. I'm still floored by the journey, and my head is spinning from the sheer intensity of the experience.
